Current Issues in data.gov

The page for data.gov's "Dataset 138" is at http://www.data.gov/raw/138 and offers a link to a CSV file describing "toxic chemical releases and waste management activities reported annually by certain industries as well as federal facilities."

The link for the CSV file is http://www.data.gov/download/138/csv which redirects to a "AS_2005_v05.exe," a self-extracting archive that only runs on Windows operating systems.

ZIP should be used to compress data, not .exe.

Examples

Although unzip can uncompress some .exe (e.g., Dataset 138), it cannot uncompress all (e.g., Dataset 700):

bash-3.2$ unzip IA_2008_v08.exe
Archive: IA_2008_v08.exe
End-of-central-directory signature not found. Either this file is not
a zipfile, or it constitutes one disk of a multi-part archive. In the
latter case the central directory and zipfile comment will be found on
the last disk(s) of this archive.
unzip: cannot find zipfile directory in one of IA_2008_v08.exe or
IA_2008_v08.exe.zip, and cannot find IA_2008_v08.exe.ZIP, period.

(Note: This does not uncompress on a Windows machine, either)
