interesting observations

This demo presents associations between various kinds of information on public libraries in the states of New York, California, Michigan, Ohio, Florida, Texas and Illinois. The public libraries in those states are compared to each other based on the following variables:

  • Annual total visits
  • Collection sizes for audio, printed and video materials
  • Number of public library branches
  • Services provided for children education
  • Hours of operation
  • Size of served population
  • Total revenue and total expenditures

These variables, along with time of collection, constitute several dimensions along which analysis can be conducted. To enable users to conduct multi-dimensional analyses (in up to 4 dimensions, plus time), a motion chart based interface is used. Using this motion chart, users can plot data based on:

  • X axis values
  • Y axis values
  • Size of a plotted point
  • Color of a plotted point

To track changes in the 4 selected variables over time, a user can simply hit the play button. Should the user find an interesting data arrangement while in play mode, a static view can be saved for later reference.

Technology used

This demo uses a google motion chart (http://code.google.com/apis/visualization/documentation/gallery/motionchart.htm) that takes library variables as a primary filter and year of collection to enable time line browsing. In addition, two extended SPARQL features are used:

  • Casting literal value to typed literals using "xsd:integer"
  • Naming variables using "as"
