Change of Policy Coverage by County

This animation shows Spatio-temporal trends in smoking legislation by county from 1990 to 2009. Each frame represents one year and lasts 1 second. From year to year, number of counties is growing as smoke-free laws are being adopted (in workplaces and restaurants ONLY). 3rd dimension represents the extent of county (population) that is covered by the smoke-free law; those counties in which all cities adopted laws are the highest, i.e. 100% of county population is covered by law.

David McCandless: The beauty of data visualization

David McCandless does a great job of showing how data can be visualized to surprise us. He makes a great point about 2/3 the way through, discussing how long it took to scrape data from PubMed, that data visualization is a form of knowledge compression and curation.
